HABLAB

HABlab is an experimental environment for objects and rituals. Our group was comprised of Product, Interior and Interaction designers and each of our diciplines were required to

create our very own HABlab. A series of documentaries, by renowned architectural historian Tom Dyckhoff, named The Secret Life of Buildings, focused on HOME, WORK, and PLAY and how physical spaces affect the lives of people in those respects.

For our team’s HABlab we decided to work on the theme of HOME. Our team come from a variety of backgrounds, from China to Bulgaria, small islands to capital cities, all of us have different experiences of living and different perspectives of “HOME” . This is what ultimately inspired our final creation, The

'Living Room'.

By suspending familliar household objects in the air we were able to use a forced perspective to make the objects appear “normal” from some angles and abnormal from others, this is a visual representration of how HOME is different to every individual and how the word’s meaning is affected by the individuals perspective. We used “pre-loved” objects to create a homely feel. Additionally, we decided to project a warm pattern over the objects as we all agreed that home is about warmth and comfort, even in scotland. During the research process we created a survey asking participants to describe HOME in one word. The results we got back were extremely varied and thus solidified the concept.
